Montana Land Ownership Mapping Service
Above is an example of a land ownership overlay for Google Earth. You can view the land ownership boundaries, landowner's names, and land owner type [
BLM,
State ,
Forest Service , etc]. To make it even more useful, the coloring is transparent so you can view satellite images of the land in 3D while you check out
boundary lines and ownership status. Plus you can select any parcel and get the name of the land owner's name in a pop-up window.
- Map any private or public land boundary to overlay in Google Earth or your GPS.
- Create a colored overlay map showing land ownership in your county or in your hunting district (state lands, BLM, Forest Service).
- Use county land ownership overlay maps in Google Earth or Virtual Earth to help find hunting areas, landowner names, or recreation access.
Benefits
- Find out who owns what.
- Use satellite imagery and transparent ownership coloring to become more familiar with boundaries in your area.
- Get a better feel for the lay of the land and how it relates to the property boundaries.
Data
Data is obtained from state land surveys and has been found to be accurate from 1 to 30 yards in on the ground GPS testing of random boundary data. Not all data
is tested and is subject to error.

Download Google Earth Here. If the map doesn't display like the image shown below check our
Frequently Asked Questions for Graphics Help. The Ownership colors should be transparent (so you can see through to the satellite image of the ground).
If they aren't, your graphics settings in Google Earth may need to be changed (see FAQ). The ownership overlay requires a lot of your computers graphics card. If the image doesn't
display as pictured below, you may need to
update your graphics card driver - PC
(
Mac update instructions) or your
graphics card may be too old to handle this complex image rendering. If this is the case, you can still view the land ownership overlay, but you won't be able to see through
to the satellite image of the ground.
Haven't ever loaded a track, route, or waypoint to your GPS. No Problem! Check your
GPS user's manual for information on connecting your GPS to your computer to upload data to your GPS. Garmin users: use the MapSource software that came with your Garmin GPS to
open the .gpx file and transfer to your device. See your user's manual for specific instructions. In general, the software you use must be newer than 2004 to support GPX files.

"Awesome service and a pleasure to work with. I will be returning."
-Mike Briggs of Horseshoe Bend, ID
"I am very happy with the product, it seems be accurate and consistent with paper maps I already have. I have only had it a few days but have already
found new areas and/or clarified boundaries. I use it to find fringe areas near private land to hunt for elk mostly, but some mule deer and turkey spots as well."
